Areas of interest in and around Aljezur
Visit the Western Atlantic coast of the Algarve:
The Western Atlantic area of the Algarve is still relatively untouched by tourism and many of the beaches are just that...beaches! No resort! This is what makes the region so special and enjoyed by those lucky enough to visit. For instance, Monte Clérigo (just west of Aljezur) is, at the moment, a small residential area on the hill above the beach...delightful, quiet and, possibly, wanting to stay that way! The Western Atlantic coast boasts beautiful beaches, unspoilt countryside and spectacular views of the coastline!
- Take a trip to the working windmill above the village at Odeceixe and watch the age old traditional grinding of the grains. It also offers fantastic views of the surrounding countryside and the river Seixe.
- The windmill at Arregata - just a short distance from Rogil. You can see the various implements used for grinding the cereals.
Opening hours: 14.00 to 18.00. Closed Saturday, Sunday, Monday and holidays.
Churches in the Aljezur area
Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Alva:
Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Alva or Igreja Nova (the New Church) which is centrally situated in the 'new' half of Aljezur, was finished at the end of the 18th century. Nossa Senhora da Alva is the patron saint of Aljezur.
- Igreja da Misericórdia, Aljezur - built in the 16th century, destroyed in the earthquake of 1755 and rebuilt in the 18th century.
- The parish Church of Odeceixe - 19th century
- The Church at Bordeira possibly predates the earthquake of 1755 and is of quite a simple architectural style outside but the inside is quite different with intricate baroque style woodwork.

Historical remains in the Aljezur area
- Visit the remains of the 10th century Moorish Castle, Castelo de Aljezur:
Entrance is free - well, there's not a lot of it left and no gate to collect the money -but the view is fantastic! The castle is signposted to the left of the bridge as you come into Aljezur. The road is very steep in some places and quite narrow, but it's easier than walking! There is a small area where you can park just outside and the road carries on past the castle, down a hill and rejoins a main road - we found this the easiest way down.

- Fort at Carrapeteira: The fort dates from the late 17th century and was built to protect the area from corsairs and pirates. It enclosed the local Church that was already in existence dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Conceição.
- Ruins of Arrifana Fort: It was built in the reign of Filipe III to defend the fishermen. It now offers a wonderful view point.
Leisure activities in the Aljezur area
Surfing at one of the beaches on the Western Atlantic coast:
The Western Atlantic coast of the Algarve is famous for its surf! This area, with its unspoilt beaches and its 'Atlantic rollers' attracts surfers from all over the world. There are many surf schools and camps in the area, offering tuition and hire of equipment. If you haven't surfed before, or are relatively new to surfing then it is probably best to join one of the surf schools to start with because the waters can be dangerous for inexperienced surfers.
